Our birthday parties are amazing, and sometimes it’s hard to tell who has more fun – the kids or the volunteers. Party hats, cake, and gifts – the kids love it.
Due to our multiple locations, we host a birthday party essentially every week, celebrating children ages 0 to 18 who have birthdays during that month. When the birthday children arrive, the room is full of party balloons and tables with colorful tablecloths, Mardi Gras beads, and white painter hats. The fun begins with decorating their own birthday hats. Not that they always admit it, but many of our teens actually enjoy this as well. The white painter hats are transformed into works of art, embellished with unique designs, using paint markers and stickers. Each child has a hat to wear at the party and take home. Some tell us that they keep the hats on their dressers as a fond reminder of the party.
We always bring birthday candy, and play lots of games. The games vary depending on the location and volunteer group, but the kids always enjoy them. Face painting and crafts have also become very popular at our parties. At some locations, after the decorating of hats, the members from the entire club join the birthday kids to play games in the gym or outside. After the games we serve delicious birthday cake, and always sing “Happy Birthday.” Then there’s the “mail call” where each child gets a unique handmade birthday card, and of course they all get to open presents.
Our goal is to host parties by groups or individuals from the community. We love our youth groups, some of which have helped us for many years: Harlem High Key Club, Guilford High School National Honor Society, and Auburn Key Club, who have helped us celebrate many parties over the years. We also love new youth groups, families, and adults. Please note that some of our locations can only be hosted by adults.
